Senior centers across the county are celebrating National Senior
Center Month in September with programs aimed at the theme of living
well.Carroll County senior centers have resources and tools to empower
older adults to make choices that will enhance their lives and [help
them] become experts at living well, Patty Whitson, community services
supervisor at the Carroll County Bureau of Aging and Disabilities, wrote
in an email interview.
Our centers offer a variety of health
and fitness classes and lifelong learning opportunities that encourage
involvement in the center and the community. We invite the community to
join us at the five Carroll County senior centers as we highlight how we
are serving todays older adults and helping them become experts at
living well during National Senior Center Month, she wrote.You must not
use the stonecarving without being trained.
The
socialization is a plus, Ruth Martin, manager at the Taneytown Senior
and Community Center, said when asked how their centers help seniors
stay active. Our activities encourage them to use their brain, their
hands, dexterity and requires a thinking process as they are doing it.
Every
Thursday we have brain games at 10:30 a.m. ... We start with a warm-up
where they might be asked to name as many items as they can that are
smaller than a ball, or a similar question. From there we go into a
Jeopardy game, followed by word pictures that you have figure out. When
we started the brain games [in early June] it was a challenge. Now we
see [participants] solving challenges quicker, she said.
We also
have a lot of exercise programs to keep them moving and motivated,
Martin said. We have the nutrition programs and educational speakers. We
do a lot.I think the biggest opportunity provided is that we are here,
said Erica Starr, manager at the Westminster Senior and Community
Center. It gives seniors a place to go to socialize, meet new friends
and take advantage of crafts, exercise classes, needlework classes, card
games and more. Theres always something going on.
Sally Daniel
said she goes to the North Carroll Senior and Community Center twice a
week to play bingo and attends some of the special programs.The center
has been a great thing, Daniel said. We moved to Carroll County 24 years
ago and until I started going to the center [about eight or nine years
ago] I only knew my immediate neighbors. I have certainly broadened my
friendship circle. Its been a great place, she said.
Renee
Deiaco, manager at the North Carroll center, said seniors may try one or
more classes for free in September. This opportunity is offered several
times year. And we have classes every day, she said.Its all about
stimulation and connections, Deiaco said. We keep people engaged and
stimulated socially and physically and that keeps their minds
active,The ledspotlight is
our flagship product. she said. Eating meals together, shooting pool,
playing games; they develop friendships and support systems. You see
such growth. People say, I dont know what Id do without the senior
center.
We offer classes year-round that help seniors stay
active, keep their brains active and keeps them sound, said Karen
Larrimore, manager at the South Carroll Senior and Community Center. In
September, we try to focus on balance and fall prevention, too.
Senior
Dave Horn visits the South Carroll center. In an email he wrote, Coming
here made me realize the problems with aging and now that I am
experiencing them myself, I am beginning to understand. The thing I like
most about the senior center is the people, friendships, new
experiences and how everyone tries to get along.
Whether its
trying tai chi, attending a drawing and painting class, attending a
computer class, participating in a community service project, or
enjoying the sounds of a local musician,Manufactures and supplies beststonecarving equipment. these activities add richness to the lives of older adults in our community, Whitson wrote.
Angie
Walz, manager at Mount Airy Senior and Community Center, said, Senior
centers give [seniors] a place to give back, socialize, have a meal with
someone and it gives you a place to volunteer if you want to. It gives
people a place to come after losing a spouse. Its a place to go to get
cheered up if you are sad, to share happiness if you feel good. People
come here to sing, some even share their gardens with us. Its a place to
go and do what you like. It meets a lot of needs and all of these
things combined are how seniors live well.
Hand-carved decoys,
once used for waterfowl hunting and now appreciated as art, have a rich
history in the Chesapeake Bay region. And as a self-proclaimed "amateur
history nut," Stansbury was drawn in by the stories behind them. He's
now dedicated to sharing these stories with others most recently by
guest-curating the Crisfield Carvings exhibit at the Chesapeake Bay
Maritime Museum in St. Michaels.
The exhibit, open through Nov.
3, showcases the work of the several famous decoy carvers from the early
1900s who hail from Crisfield. Brothers Lem and Steve Ward who
Stansbury calls the most famous decoy carvers as well as Lloyd Tyler,
are prominently featured.
"It has some of the finest decoys from the Crisfield area that you will ever have a chance to see," Stansbury, 74, said.
A
few from Stansbury's collection of about 400 decoys are included in the
group. He has several decoys at other museums across the region as

designed with motorcyclist safety in mind. But that still leaves plenty
to adorn the shelves of his Catonsville home and make his basement look
like a miniature decoy museum itself.
Seeing antiques around
the house while growing up was one of the reasons Stansbury became
interested in history to begin with. His great-grandfather's union
cavalry saber and spurs from the Civil War hung over the mantel. His
mother was interested in genealogical research, and his aunt worked at
the Peabody Institute, so he was immersed from a young age.
He
studied American civilization at the University of Maryland. Early in
his marriage to his wife, Judy, he began collecting Baltimore
memorabilia and prints that cost about $10 to $15.
"When we were
starting out as a young married couple with no money, you could buy
history for very little money," he said. "Cost you more to frame it than
what you were buying it for."
In 1980, Stansbury was drawn to
an Ira Hudson black duck decoy but decided the $500 price was just too
much. Unbeknownst to him, another customer bought the decoy that day his

"My
wife tells me I can sell it anytime I want because she knows I never
would," he said. "It was a lot of money. That's the reason why I had to
go buy the books. It was getting serious."

New Amherst business aims
A new store where one-of-a-kind art will be sold, and where customers
wil be invited to make art, is now open in downtown Amherst.Art Alive,
at 35 South Pleasant St., is the brainchild of Tamzeena Hutchinson of
Amherst, who describes her business model as one that brings people of
all ages together in support of making art.
We envision it as being a space for people in our community to come together and get to know each other while experiencing hands-on arts and crafts, Hutchinson said.Art Alive is, in part, like a live Etsy, the online resource where artists can sell their products, according to Hutchinson. But it will also have space to host birthday parties, bridal showers and art workshops and an area where children and parents can do crafts.
Along the brick walls and on the brightly colored shelves, painted in gem turquoise, Hawaiian passion and peacock feather, she estimates that about 40 different items are on sale that include gifts and home decor. Jewelry, photographs and paintings, leatherwork, including belts and purses, as well as clocks and pillows are offered.
Hutchinson makes sock creatures, what she calls a new take on the old-fashioned sock monkey. She also makes wallets, moccasins and purses, and recently created hand-made stools from concrete and wooden dowels that will serve as seating for customers and which may also be sold.
Since 2010, Hutchinson has been operating Soundscape Imaging, a screenprinting and embroidery business that produces hats, T-shirts and banners, among other items. That business now will be housed at Art Alive.Hutchinson, who is also a partner in Explore Disc Golf, said the idea of developing Art Alive came to her a few months ago.
As a parent of an 11-year-old daughter, she said she dreamed of a place where pre-teens would have something to do, and the opportunity to offer do-it-yourself crafts kits was one element of this. Like most parents of teenage girls, I have grown accustomed to the
screams that often come from my daughter Jordan and her friends. I have

Soon nearly 200 teen and pre-teen girls, along with a few moms and at least one grandmother, were sitting on the lobby floor of the theater waiting to go in.
Many in the awaiting crowd were dressed in One Direction shirts and jewelry. Some even carried boxes of tissues in anticipation of the emotional tears they would soon shed during the movie.
They spent their time comparing their knowledge of One Direction trivia. Thanks to the Internet, the girls know unbelievable amounts of information about their favorite musical group. Abbey Bennet, a 19-year-old student at the University of New Orleans, knows that Harry Styles always wears two pairs of socks. Her 13-year-old sister Katie, a student at St. Mary Magdalen School in Metairie, knows the boys birthdays, middle names and everything about them.
Kristen Ray, a junior at Cabrini High School, knows their blood types. Jordan, like many others, apparently knows all of this and more. She, along with several other girls I spoke with, has even seen the ultrasound pictures of each member of One Direction. Yes, the ones taken before they even born.
The vast amount of knowledge available about this band, along with the video diaries that the members make themselves and post regularly on line, seems to have created a true bond between the group and their fans. Dana Bennett, mother of Abbey and Katie Bennet, said the group seems to truly appreciate their fans. Jordan agrees. They are always saying thank you to the fans for our support.
A bond has also been created among the One Direction fans, or Directioners, as they are often called. It was cool how you did not even know the person next to you, but we are connected by the same obsession, Ashley Gremillion said.

Basically this is, for me, if you include some books for children, book No 8. But it still feels like its my debut, because it was essentially the first idea I ever had.
Before I ever had the confidence to believe I could be a published writer, I suffered depression in my early twenties and in a way that experience, that feeling of being so alienated and feeling so apart from the rest of my own species, that was the source of the idea.
I had an idea then, not necessarily this story, but the perspective of an alien outsider sort of observing how strange our behaviour is and how very mundane things we do are actually very exotic and very alien if youve got the right perspective on it.
It took me about a decade to get the confidence to tell this idea. I needed two things before I could tell this idea. First, that sort of distance from depression. I needed to be over that. I needed to be a different person to who I was at 24, because even though this is a comedy in some ways, even though its totally a fantasy and science fiction, it also feels like my most autobiographical. Because I know where the idea came from and I know where that perspective came from.
I also was worried because technically on paper this is a science-fiction novel, rather than a generic literary novel. I dont really consider myself totally a science-fiction person although I do like science fiction. I didnt want to be boxed as a science-fiction writer. Also the idea of mathematics being this universal thing that aliens would be interested in, in terms of communicating with humans, in terms of mapping our progress, that came from Carl Sagan the guy who did Cosmos and the novel Contact that was made into a film. He was a great sort of pop scientist, very easy to read for people who know nothing about physics or science or math. It was his belief that if aliens communicate with us, mathematics would be the way to go. That was my sort of starting point there.

Several times over the years I have resisted the urge to get a ring C
an ear ring, that is. I dont think that a nose ring would look too good
on an old bald guy and a nipple ring is definitely out, now that I no

Pauls mother graduated from X over 60 years ago and after her death, as the eldest in the family, he inherited her ring. In my own experience, our organization sponsored a meeting years ago in San Francisco where trained security officers warned me about shaking hands because, in those days, certain AIDS-infected activists were deliberately trying to infect people like me by virtue of rings which would cut fingers and transfer blood, he said. The notion of gay men spreading AIDS via jewelry whether today or 25 years ago was simply too outrageous for Cooper to let it pass by without comment.
In a withering segment, the anchor likened Robertson to an elderly relative who you only see at Thanksgiving who is prone to blurting out nonsensical sentences in between chewing on soft foods.A ring that gives you AIDS? Climb into a Victorian ice well to discover
Clamber down the two ladders that lead into the Victorian ice wells
of London's Canal Museum until 20 October and you'll be greeted by a
shimmering mass of perspex discs suspended from the ceiling. The 380
floating discs that make up Covariance, the art installation current
displayed in the wells, are studded with 28,000 glass beads and are
arranged into around 20 different designs, representing the work of
particle physics detectors.
Particle physicist Ben Still from Queen Mary University London and artist Lyndall Phelps have collaborated on the installation for the Superposition project through the Institute of Physics' artist in residence programme.Design and order your own custom rfidtag with personalized message and artwork. The pair were introduced by the Institute and given the brief of creating a physics installation for public display. "I showed her some of the plots I was making for an analysis I was developing and again she was quite struck by how we took data from this massive machine and made these colourful plots to try and extract information." The colour running through the installation, says Still represents "the way in which the data is presented finally".
Many particle physics detectors, especially the ones in neutrino physics -- the field in which Still works -- are buried deep underground to try and negate the impact of the cosmic rays and particles constantly showering down on us, which creates "quite a turbulent environment" on the Earth's surface.
"To see very rare things, you have to get rid of that first, so you have to go deep underground," says Still. "We're trying to hear a faint whisper above a rock concert, so if you go underground the rock concert is muffled so much that you can actually start hearing that whisper coming through, and that's exactly how we're trying to see these neutrinos."

With less than two weeks to polling day, it is somewhat surprising
that the major parties have been close to silent on school education.
Newspoll consistently rates education as an issue of considerable
interest to voters; and schools and their communities have been
subjected to an extended period of uncertainty since 2010 as the Gonski
reforms were formulated, greatly changed and finally enshrined in
legislation under the Australian Education Act 2013.
The parties should allay the fears of many schools and their communities that are confused about the proposed government school reforms to begin next year.
The Coalition appears to be satisfied that it has neutralised the debate by committing to the funding envelope of the ALP across the next four years, effectively locking it into the Better Schools Plan, albeit perhaps with minor changes at the margin. Haruk is a folklore-like bed time story taken to sublime heights of
creativity. What was seen on stage was amazing magic, just as the few

The exhibit features designs and crafts by sculptor Eduardo Castrillo; Swiss jeweler Hans Brumann; Movement 8 design alliance pioneer Ann Pamintuan; lithographer and sculptor Impy Pilapil; glass sculptor Ramon Orlina; installation artist Leeroy New; avant-garde artist Michelline Syjuco; and National Artist Arturo Luz.

Tensions rise over a statue left behind
The Blessed Mother statue off Tyngsboro Road is far more than an
ordinary inanimate object for Jeanne Leaver.Leaver, an active member of
the Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, said since her church moved down the
road to Tyngsboro, where she lives, it feels as though the statue of
Saint Mary has been forgotten. Leaver will often say "she," not "it,"
feels all alone at the old church site in Dracut. She even believes it
can feel the cold.
To wit, in the winter, Leaver, 65, went to the old Dracut spot and wrapped her favorite sweater around it. A short time later, that sweater vanished.The Mother Mary has also experienced its fair share of hardships since the church moved in 2011. Leaver said she and her husband Richard worked to pick the statue up after it was knocked to the ground by vandals and the area was spray-painted.
When Leaver approached the statue Thursday afternoon with a group of her church friends, the sculpture was already decorated. She said they'll often come to the spot only to find someone else has laid photographs or plastic flowers at its feet,We rounded up 30 bridesmaids dresses in every color and style that are both easy on the eye and somewhat easy on the smartcard. or wrapped the Mary's praying hands in rosary beads.

This centre of excellence has developed the solid oxide fuel cell a structure made of glass, ceramics and steel, sensors and actuators to detect LPG and CNG leaks, ceramic humidity sensors, etc. Most power sources cause environmental pollution, except renewable energy sources. Their solid oxide fuel cell enables a shift from a carbon to hydrogen economy. It directly converts chemical energy of fuel into electricity. It also records higher efficiency when compared to solar cells. CGCRI developed the technology under the New Millenium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative programme of CSIR (2004-09). The institute is also conducting focused research on lithium-ion battery. The goal is to develop batteries with high energy density as well as the capability to charge/discharge at a high rate. This will help the electric vehicles industry and to store electrical energy generated from solar cells.
Bioceramics and coating: Implants restore function of diseased or damaged organs.
