One recent breezy evening in Montreal, Juan Martín del Potro traded
powerful serves and thunderous forehands with Milos Raonic for two
otherwise uninspiring sets, won by Raonic. This tale of tall tennis
players highlighted what many have contended — and in some cases feared —
will be the future of men’s professional tennis.
In another
setting — a basketball arena, for instance — del Potro, at 6 feet 6
inches, and Raonic, at 6 feet 5 inches, would have stacked up as
average-size competitors. On a tennis court measuring 78 feet long by 36
feet wide, they looked a little out of place, even against each other,
like neighboring apartment towers hovering over a quaint suburban
village.
Raonic’s new coach, Ivan Ljubicic, said that was only
because longtime followers of men’s tennis had been conditioned to
watching smaller or more average-size men compete. But the trend toward
taller players is indisputable, he said, while stopping short of
proclaiming the sky as the limit.“I don’t think the tour will become a
6-7, 6-8 tour," Ljubicic said.
“Yes, if you are that size, it
could be an advantage, but tennis, I think, will be more about 6-5,
where you can make the most out of the height without giving up too much
in the other areas. And if the tall guy can move really well, then you
have something special," Ljubicic added.
Tennis players have
been getting bigger for years. When Lendl emerged as a force in the
early 1980s, rare was the top-ranked man who was more than 6 feet. A

A trend does not necessarily

Basketball Association titles without a conventional center, and small,
creative point guards have been in vogue for several years. In men’s
tennis, taller players have produced increasingly good results, but the
best or great players have been holding steady in the range of 6-1 to
6-3.

development for the U.S. Tennis Association, argued that Roger Federer

Memorial funds short in Westford
The 12th anniversary of a horrific day in the country's history will
hold special meaning this Sept. 11, as residents lay their eyes for the
first time on a fully-completed memorial dedicated to those who died in
the attack.
Nancy Cook is one of a team of nine on the Westford Remembers 9-11 Memorial Committee, which formed almost a year ago to pull together a 6-foot-tall sculpture, to be unveiled Sept. 11. The piece will honor the 92 Massachusetts residents who perished in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. All the names will be listed with special decoration of the two Westford residents who died that day -- James Hayden and Susan MacKay."It's our honor to help the Westford Remembers 9-11 Memorial Committee achieve its goal," said Mark O'Neil, president and publisher of The Sun. "We thank those who also have contributed, and encourage others to join us in honoring the Westford residents and first responders who gave their lives on Sept. 11."
The statue has been in the works for the last year by Westford firefighter David Christiana, who designed the sculpture. Visitors to the space between Westford Town Hall and the police and fire stations today will find construction crews working to ready the area.
Christiana and Cook are both Westford Academy graduates and natives of the town. The terrorist attacks hit so close to home for them that they both wanted to do something special.The sculpture -- with a featured piece of infrastructure saved from the fallen Twin Towers of the World Trade Center -- will stand with a polished bronze piece engraved with a depiction of the towers. Flames will wrap around the metal I-beam, Christiana explained, with the flames almost protecting the metal. He said he believes only 1,000 other entities across the country have a piece of the New York rubble from that day. He called the piece "sacred."
The bronze work will be situated within a pentagon shape at its base, to symbolize the attack on the capital's Pentagon that day. The base will be illuminated with light shining through green sea glass. The new Cold Chisel Music label deal with Universal will also ensure that royalties continue to go to the family of late drummer Steve Prestwich.
The move was engineered by John O’Donnell, one of Cold Chisel’s managers who also heads the EMI label that was taken over by Universal this year as part of a $1.9 million merger, while the lung-belting Jimmy Barnes says the creation of their won label was motivated by a desire to ‘shake up’ their catalogue and introduce their music to new generation of fans.
“We’re proud of all the albums we’ve made and the impact the band has had and we’re keen for people to keep discovering Cold Chisel’s music,” says Barnes. “We think that having our own label will give us the best shot at doing that.”
Principle songwriter Walker says that Cold Chisel Music is about offering autonomy over their historic discography as they reach their fourth decade as a band, first forming in Adealaide as a heavy metal outfit in late 1973. ”Having our own imprint will give us complete control over how our recordings are presented to people over the coming years,” says Walker. ”Ian, Phil, Jim, Steve and I always liked to do things our own way so this feels like the right next step for Cold Chisel.”
George Ash, President of Universal Music Asia Pacific also shared his enthusiasm over the new deal. “We feel honoured and privileged to be working with Cold Chisel as they launch their own label and for the first time manage their incredible recordings themselves,” says Ash. “The songs of Cold Chisel have been an important part of our lives and it is with huge pride we look forward to supporting the band in the re-launch of their catalogue across Australia and New Zealand.”

Friends' view Douglas Library
The Friends of the Douglas Library display recently got a facelift.
The main floor of the library now features a newly-expanded variety of
books for purchase. In addition to a special shelf for gift books, there
are also sections dedicated to specific popular authors and non-fiction
topics. Shelves include larger-sized trade paperbacks, small paperbacks
and hardcover fiction titles for purchase, as well as an area dedicated
to DVDs and audio books. Contributing to the display were a number of
Friends volunteers, including students Maeve and Megan Howard, Danny and
Liam Keleher, Lauren Escott and Katelyn Royce, as well as numerous
adult volunteers.
The Friends of the Douglas Library are all geared toward book sales, said member Maureen Johnson. Ongoing sales, as well as larger events held periodically throughout the year, raise money to pay for a variety of library service enhancements, including books on CD, library passes, large-print books, magazine subscriptions, childrens summer programs and adult programs, according to Johnson.
Johnsons daughter Maeve, entering her junior year at RHAM High School, has been volunteering for the Friends for eight years. Much of her time has been spent helping to get ready for the larger periodic sales. During the year we take the donations that come in and sort them by category and condition, said Maeve. Its not hard work, and its definitely fun, she added. And patrons of the book sales seem to appreciate how well-organized and well-priced the book sales are. Its really good to see how people react to that, said Maeve.
Younger sister Megan, entering her freshman year at RHAM, agreed that volunteering can be a lot of fun. The people you meet are interesting, she said. Like the Johnsons, most fellow volunteers are book-lovers. Its a really friendly group, said Megan.
Though the bin outside of the library is intended only for book donations, the Johnsons said they have found some interesting items when theyve gone in for sorting. Toys, binders full of papers, a portable CD player - all have found their way into the bin. Among the more interesting items were a bag full of shark teeth and a granite sample from one of the big box stores. I think were still using the granite as a door stop, said Maureen, with a laugh.

Not Adam Shoalts, a modern-day wilderness explorer with an Indiana Jones hat and a matching curiosity that last August took him on a solo expedition into some never-travelled waters near James Bay.It was cold and rainy and Shoalts was shivering in his canoe as he paddled downstream on the Again River, a waterway snaking along the Ontario-Quebec border.

Elliot and one of his employees worked on perfecting the design, and have built about 1,000 yards of the fenders so far. “The marina probably still has another six months until it’s finished, so I anticipate continued demand,” he says. “And the ability to get my company’s name on the fenders around the marina helps get the message out about the package I’m delivering to customers. They can say to their friends: ‘He doesn’t only do canvas work. He’ll do the bumpers for your boats as well."
To increase profit, Elliot and his crew build their own bolts for the fender systems. “The jetty specialists wanted me to buy their bolts at $3 each—and I can make my own at $1 each,” he says. “When you’re talking 1,000 yards of fenders, there are probably 3,000 bolts. That’s an extra $6,000 in my pocket."
Elliot points out that the more control you have over the various components used to produce an end product, the better that product will be.A indoorpositioningsystem has real weight in your customer's hand. Will Self eats fish and chips
It’s a strong claim: “The best fish and chips in the world”; as is
another bon – but ungrammatical – mot, attributed to the Master Fryer
himself: “There is no chip ever cut by man which cannot be cooked to
perfection in three minutes.” Taken together, these propositions suggest
a sort of fried-food cosmology – or possibly a gnosis, because, if you
want to acquaint yourself with Harry Ramsden’s second law of
chipodynamics you’ll have to pitch up at one of his 30-odd restaurants,
which are scattered throughout the British isles much as . . . well,
much as the crushed, dead chips were scattered on the tiled floor of the
food court when I swung by the other day to test empirically the
validity of his first law.
Of course, Ramsden himself is long gone. An interwar figure, he appears in sepia tones, grinning out from the chippy’s wall and, with his wing-collar and natty hat, closely resembling a cross between Wilfrid Brambell and Neville Chamberlain. He started the business in a hut in Guiseley, Leeds, in the late 1920s, but it’s grown and grown over the years, being snaffled up by corporate after corporate then regurgitated through mergers. The hut grew into a 250-seat restaurant – apparently the biggest fish-and-chip eatery in the world – but now this has gone the way of all chip fat: down the drain. After losing money for some years the parent company flogged it to an outfit called Wetherby Whaler.
I’ve eaten in various Ramsdens over the years, hanging on pathetically to the notion that buried in their red-and-white Formica frames there must remain beating a distinctively northern heart. But then, what’s in a white rose? A Harry Ramsden’s by any other name would probably taste remarkably similar. What I’m driving at here is that the food has not been great – contra Harry’s law, I’ve found soggy chips, pulpy fish in grotty batter, and mushy peas with the flavour and consistency of plumber’s mastic. I gave up on the chain for years after finding myself sitting over one too many inedible carbo-fests and ruefully contemplating boshing something up out of these building materials masquerading as nutrition.
Still, everyone deserves a second chance (except for me; I deserve at least 50), so I headed for that little beachhead of the north in the south, Euston Station, to see whether anything had improved. To begin with, the signs were not auspicious – there was the previously mentioned detritus on the floor, while on the counter sat a styrofoam tray in which reposed all of the lately fried elements tending towards gelid entropy. I shuddered, and thought: I don’t have to do this . . . I could pick up some sushi at M&S, or a burger from the King, or some noodles from Nam-Po! – hell,Weymouth is collecting gently used, dry cleaned customkeychain at their Weymouth store. I could even buy a baguette from Delice de France and another from Upper Crust and have a sword fight with myself, scampering this way and that across the concourse until I was arrested by the British Transport Police. (And surely, there can be no richer and more satisfying humiliation than that.)
Still, when the going gets tough, the tough get eating. The man behind the counter was the sole of courtesy as I havered between cod,We sell bestsmartcard and different kind of laboratory equipment in us. plaice and haddock; a wholly otiose decision, since, as we all know, there should be a moratorium on the fishing – and by extension the eating – of all four. But before long I had my own styrofoam tray and was ready to assay Ramsden’s second law.

True, I make no mention of the flavours of any of this food, but why would I? If you want flavour, stop at home – fast food aspires to the condition of being photographed, not consumed.
I ate about half my chips and all my battered cod and mushy peas. I drank my crap coffee, I listened to the train announcements and wished I were about to head north out of this cesspit of gourmandising towards a more earthy realm where nowt folk were queer and nowt needed frying for more than three minutes – including bruschetta. For all I know, Harry Ramsden’s may well serve the best fish and chips in the world, or the appearance of this slogan on their walls may be entirely accidental. The truth of both propositions is by no means inconsistent.

Of course, Ramsden himself is long gone. I gave up on the chain for years after finding myself sitting over one too many inedible carbo-fests and ruefully contemplating boshing something up out of these building materials masquerading as nutrition.
Still, everyone deserves a second chance (except for me; I deserve at least 50), so I headed for that little beachhead of the north in the south, Euston Station, to see whether anything had improved. To begin with, the signs were not auspicious – there was the previously mentioned detritus on the floor, while on the counter sat a styrofoam tray in which reposed all of the lately fried elements tending towards gelid entropy. I shuddered, and thought: I don’t have to do this . . . I could pick up some sushi at M&S, or a burger from the King, or some noodles from Nam-Po! – hell,Weymouth is collecting gently used, dry cleaned customkeychain at their Weymouth store. For all I know, Harry Ramsden’s may well serve the best fish and chips in the world, or the appearance of this slogan on their walls may be entirely accidental. The truth of both propositions is by no means inconsistent.

Perry signs sweeping Texas abortion restrictions
Rick Perry signed sweeping new abortion restrictions on Thursday that

A very important relationship that lets us do our work

few months ago, I was conducting a leadership workshop with senior
managers of a large bank. We were doing a session on Relationship
Networks. Each person was asked to map out all 'relationships' - the
people at work and outside who contributed to their success on the job
and examine the nature of their relationships with them. I was happy to
note that many of these men acknowledged the contribution of their wives
to their jobs. "Because she manages the house and children so well, I
can work 12-14 hours a day," said one. "I am the AGM at office but my
wife is the General Manager at home," remarked another. All of them
laughed indulgently. Because these men do not have to worry about clean
bathrooms, laundry, ironing, fresh vegetables, getting the milk,
children's homework, cooking, fixing the leaky tap and caring for the
elderly grandmother at home. They can focus on their jobs,We printers

It is not only an important relationship but also one that is among the most stressful to handle. Even if we don't do the actual work ourselves, the responsibility of managing the staff falls to the woman of the house. If we are to be General Managers of the house, these are our team members, the valued subordinates to whom we have the delegated the responsibility of the household. Like any Human Resource manager, we struggle with acquisition, retention, motivation, training and compensation of our staff. I guess there are many examples of a happy and peaceful coexistence, where the two are genuinely fond of each other as individuals but these are more of an exception than the norm. It requires finesse, tact and a fine balancing act.
Having a maid is an advantage that many in the first world do not have. If you are reading this in India, you have definitely grown up seeing a maid work at your home. None of us, the urban educated, are used to doing manual labour at home. One of my friends was unhappy that her husband had accepted a posting in London. 'Now I will have to give up my job and become a maid,' she complained. While the software engineer, the Call Centre executive and the plumber who goes to work in the Gulf are respected as professionals, the domestic help is at the bottom of the rung. It could be a coincidence that most of them - the kaamwalis, the baais, the cooks, the nannies and the ayahs are women. They do women's work inside the house. It is ironical that this is what enables both the master and mistress to do other work, work that is more exciting, creative and remunerative than washing dishes, mopping floors and dusting shelves. I don't think we respect the work, therefore it is difficult to respect the person who does the work. It seems to be low skilled work done by uneducated people yet, I am sure a avvy investment banker wouldn't be able to sweep and swab the floors to a smooth clean shine in an hour like a good maid can.
Most of us use the word servants to describe the domestic help. There is an inherent quality of service and subservience in that word. We expect the help to be humble, loyal, hardworking and undemanding rather like the devoted Ramu kaka or Kaaki of the early Bollywood movies who had brought up Chotte sahib since he was a baby. The days of the grateful family retainer are long gone but the feudal expectations remain. Added to that are all the class and caste differences that lurk beneath the surface. Factor in the fact that the help is a woman who is not expected to assert her rights but sacrifice her needs for the well-being of others. It is difficult to think of her as a working professional who is paid a wage for her services. Many of the urban maids at least, have a mind of their own and are confident women who are just there to earn a decent living. There are those who answer back, who may argue. Many a maid has been sacked for 'giving attitude'. I can take that from a subordinate at work but the ego comes in the way of accepting any such behaviour from a mere maid.
With working women, the equation becomes more complicated. We veer between aggression and appeasement. A reasonably efficient maid who is good with the kid is pampered and pandered to because it would be difficult to find a replacement. I know of someone who overlooks minor pilferages because the child is very fond of the nanny. Someone who doesn't meet a standard is admonished harshly. We have high expectations that they will be committed, proactive and take ownership of their tasks. Sometimes, we take out our own guilt at not being the perfect domestic goddess on the maid. Sometimes, we over compensate. We want to be compassionate but are wary of being taken advantage of. We want to trust but cannot quell the subterranean suspicion that rises up from time to time.Aulaundry is a leading drycabinet and equipment supplier. Yes, I am concerned about her well- being which is essential to my own well- being. Sometimes, I resent that dependence. Though I give her the daily instructions, she behaves as though she is the boss of our household. We both believe that we are putting up with each other - I think that she won't get a better, more lenient and understanding employer, she believes that we won't get a better help. We have survived each other for six years based on the 'known devil' principle. There are days when I come close to firing her and days when I am just humbly grateful for her presence. Like the facebook relationship status, 'It is complicated'.
But no matter what the nature of the relationship is, the one thing that is true is that the maid is definitely worse off in life as compared to the memsahib. There are more than 9 million domestic workers in the country and they have no legal rights as workers. They do not have a minimum wage, they are expected to work long hours. We all have heard horror stories of abuse and harassment of these women and girls at the hands of their employers or agents. The National Policy for Domestic workers is still being discussed in the Cabinet. Some states have passed laws relating to minimum wages for domestic help. I doubt anything much will come of it. Few people care about these poor marginalised women. The thought of strikes by maid unions fills us with dread. Most of us do not want them to get above themselves and use their combined bargaining power.
I wonder how many generations it would take for the domestic help situation in India to become like that in the western world. My guess is that it will take quite a few years because of the sheer number of poor people who need to eke out a livelihood. The heat,dust and grime here ensures that once a week vacuuming will not do to keep our houses clean. What would be welcome is some kind of organisation in this sector. I wouldn't mind paying well for a good efficient maid who would take ownership of her job. I would be happier with clearly laid down norms that are universally applicable instead of wondering if I am overpaying her or underutilising her. If we could elevate this job to a higher level and bring some kind of professionalism to it, both the women who go out of their homes to work and those who come into could be more productive, prosperous and peaceful.

The National Policy for Domestic workers is still being discussed in the Cabinet. Some states have passed laws relating to minimum wages for domestic help. I doubt anything much will come of it. Few people care about these poor marginalised women. The thought of strikes by maid unions fills us with dread. Most of us do not want them to get above themselves and use their combined bargaining power.
I wonder how many generations it would take for the domestic help situation in India to become like that in the western world. My guess is that it will take quite a few years because of the sheer number of poor people who need to eke out a livelihood. The heat,dust and grime here ensures that once a week vacuuming will not do to keep our houses clean. What would be welcome is some kind of organisation in this sector. I wouldn't mind paying well for a good efficient maid who would take ownership of her job. I would be happier with clearly laid down norms that are universally applicable instead of wondering if I am overpaying her or underutilising her. If we could elevate this job to a higher level and bring some kind of professionalism to it, both the women who go out of their homes to work and those who come into could be more productive, prosperous and peaceful.

The top half is a 10-inch Android 4.2.2 tablet with a 1,920-by-1,Guardian's standing drycabinets offers a temporary solution to tie off and stay in compliance on standing seam roofs.080 Full HD IPS LCD screen. It's glad in white or gray plastic, with the power and volume buttons on the back of the panel - an unusual choice, but an HP signature. There's a MicroSD card slot as well as a headphone jack, but I didn't see any slot for a SIM card. The tablet has 2-megapixel cameras on the front and back.
The tablet snaps into the keyboard dock with a satisfying and secure click. The keyboard is unusually good for one of these docks, clearly borrowing from HP's laptop expertise. HP's default software build cleaves very close to stock Android, although HP throws in some mostly unremarkable pre-loaded apps into the mix. There's a printing app, a custom media player, and a file manager.
Otherwise, specs were really hard to come by at this demo. I didn't have Internet access, and there was nothing on the tablet that could remotely stress the 1.8-GHz Tegra 4 processor, which has four ARM Cortex-A15 cores and a 72-core GPU. The only thing HP would say about the battery life was that it's "all-day."
Nobody else has yet announced a tablet with this generation of ARM-based processor, which includes the Tegra 4, Samsung Exynos 5 Octa (which has appeared in Galaxy S 4 phones outside the U.S.), Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 800 and rumored chips from LG, Huawei, and others.

The touch screen had calibration issues and a strange, matte-looking layer that rendered it dimmer than it should be. The trackpad didn't differentiate its navigation area from its button area, to the extent that when you tried to click a button, the pointer would also wobble.
It's hard to assess a product when it's this early, but HP's big challenge with this tablet is the same that all Android convertible tablets have. It's even starker, though, when it's on a table next to the HP Envy x2, a very similar if slightly larger product running a full version of Windows 8. At $479.99 in the U.S., it's $170 less than the Envy x2 and on par with other high-end Android tablets. Maybe HP will be smarter to compare this to tablets like Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 than to full-fledged Windows laptops running apps like Microsoft Office.
