Tensions rise over a statue left behind
The Blessed Mother statue off Tyngsboro Road is far more than an
ordinary inanimate object for Jeanne Leaver.Leaver, an active member of
the Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, said since her church moved down the
road to Tyngsboro, where she lives, it feels as though the statue of
Saint Mary has been forgotten. Leaver will often say "she," not "it,"
feels all alone at the old church site in Dracut. She even believes it
can feel the cold.
To wit, in the winter, Leaver, 65, went to the old Dracut spot and wrapped her favorite sweater around it. A short time later, that sweater vanished.The Mother Mary has also experienced its fair share of hardships since the church moved in 2011. Leaver said she and her husband Richard worked to pick the statue up after it was knocked to the ground by vandals and the area was spray-painted.
When Leaver approached the statue Thursday afternoon with a group of her church friends, the sculpture was already decorated. Friends' view Douglas Library
The Friends of the Douglas Library display recently got a facelift.
The main floor of the library now features a newly-expanded variety of
books for purchase. In addition to a special shelf for gift books, there
are also sections dedicated to specific popular authors and non-fiction
topics. Shelves include larger-sized trade paperbacks, small paperbacks
and hardcover fiction titles for purchase, as well as an area dedicated
to DVDs and audio books. Contributing to the display were a number of
Friends volunteers, including students Maeve and Megan Howard, Danny and
Liam Keleher, Lauren Escott and Katelyn Royce, as well as numerous
adult volunteers.
The Friends of the Douglas Library are all geared toward book sales, said member Maureen Johnson. Ongoing sales, as well as larger events held periodically throughout the year, raise money to pay for a variety of library service enhancements, including books on CD, library passes, large-print books, magazine subscriptions, childrens summer programs and adult programs, according to Johnson.
Johnsons daughter Maeve, entering her junior year at RHAM High School, has been volunteering for the Friends for eight years. Much of her time has been spent helping to get ready for the larger periodic sales. During the year we take the donations that come in and sort them by category and condition, said Maeve. Its not hard work, and its definitely fun, she added. And patrons of the book sales seem to appreciate how well-organized and well-priced the book sales are. Its really good to see how people react to that, said Maeve.
Younger sister Megan, entering her freshman year at RHAM, agreed that volunteering can be a lot of fun. The people you meet are interesting, she said. Like the Johnsons, most fellow volunteers are book-lovers. Its a really friendly group, said Megan.
Though the bin outside of the library is intended only for book donations, the Johnsons said they have found some interesting items when theyve gone in for sorting. Toys, binders full of papers, a portable CD player - all have found their way into the bin. Among the more interesting items were a bag full of shark teeth and a granite sample from one of the big box stores. I think were still using the granite as a door stop, said Maureen, with a laugh.
The Johnsons feel it is important to support the local library. Its just the center of the community, said Maureen, adding that, during recent power outages, the library was one of the few buildings in the area that had power and air conditioning. Not Adam Shoalts, a modern-day wilderness explorer with an Indiana Jones hat and a matching curiosity that last August took him on a solo expedition into some never-travelled waters near James Bay.It was cold and rainy and Shoalts was shivering in his canoe as he paddled downstream on the Again River, a waterway snaking along the Ontario-Quebec border.
The river appears on topographical maps made from aerial photographs from the 1950s. Look closely at these maps, and, every now and then, there are minute hash marks that break the river line. These indicate some sort of whitewater, picked up on the aerial photographs.
After a week of nightmarish portages through impenetrable forest and black fly infested swamp, I thought that Id finally reached the easy part of the expedition, and that heading down this river that no one had ever paddled before, there was nothing I couldnt handle, Shoalts says in an interview in his dining room, where the table is covered with the old maps.
It took me a moment to digest that fact that Id discovered a waterfall, which I was really excited about. Thats a good discovery, a waterfall! But then,Most modern headlight designs include ultrasonicsensor. Im like, Oh my goodness, I think Im going to get swept over it. The current was too strong to back paddle. The riverbanks were near-vertical granite and slippery from the rain. Not much to hang on to. The canoe, laden with gear and food, approached the drop straight on.

Shoalts tumbled out the side and took a six-metre plunge.I hit the water at the bottom and I got sucked down, right underneath, which was pretty shocking.He saw the bracelet at a indoortracking store while we were on a trip. I remember distinctly thinking in my mind, I survived the plunge, great. And then thinking, Why havent I come back up to the surface? Eventually, he did, and breathed in a life-giving gulp of air and I can see out the corner of my left eye, my canoe was off to the side in an eddy, upside down, just bobbing there. I could see that the hull of the canoe was crushed in.

If someone with dementia gets stuck while wandering, or encounters an obstacle, he is likely to sit down and end up hidden away. When a vehicle is involved, the search radius immediately grows, but there is still an intended destination in most cases.
Their characteristics are very predictable, in a bad way, says Dr. Meredeth Rowe, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. Son of drug smuggler who faked his own murder
More than 30 years after one of South Florida's biggest marijuana
smugglers faked his own death to try to avoid prison, federal
authorities have charged his son with operating a multimillion-dollar
pill mill in a ritzy Fort Lauderale neighborhood.
Back in the 1970s, the Boyd Brothers John Darrell Boyd and Tracey Boyd were among the most flamboyant traffickers in the region. After they were indicted in 1977 on charges they smuggled massive amounts of pot from Colombia through Florida, the brothers fled and hid for years before they were caught and served prison terms.
Earlier this month, Darrell's son, Jason Boyd, 43, of Davie, was arrested on charges he masterminded a "cash cow" pill mill conspiracy that illegally prescribed oxycodone pain pills to "patients" and drug dealers. If convicted of drug and money-laundering charges, Boyd faces up to 30 years in prison and forfeiture of more than $4.25 million, two homes and other assets.
The same family once embroiled in the notorious marijuana flows through South Florida in the 1970s is now suspected of getting caught up in the region's latest form of drug abuse. One judge called the latest allegation far more than "an isolated instance of misjudgment."
Though neither Boyd's father nor uncle have been charged with anything related to the clinic, agents heard them talking on phone calls that were secretly intercepted, prosecutors said during a detention hearing for Jason Boyd last week in federal court in Fort Lauderdale.
Boyd employed "virtually his entire family" at the Intracoastal Medical Groups Inc. clinic on Intracoastal Drive, which brought in $1.5 million a year and prescribed 1.3 million highly addictive pain pills, federal prosecutor Julia Vaglienti told the judge.
One family member's job was to make sure that patients with out-of-state license plates parked in the nearby Galleria Mall parking lot to avoid drawing attention to the clinic, federal authorities said. Agents arrested him after getting him out of the house with a fake phone call from a school claiming his child was sick and needed to be picked up. He said Boyd had sold the clinic and was working as a consultant only to help the new owner.
"Everything is easily explained," Calvin said. "I don't think he's in the jeopardy the government says he's in."Federal authorities said Boyd has "no legitimate source of income" but made a lot of money from the clinic, much of which remains unaccounted for, and they think he was trying to hide his assets. Property seized during the raids included $10,000 in cash; two boats he appeared to own, though only one was in his name; and several vehicles, many of which were registered in other people's names though Boyd kept the titles, prosecutors said. He also paid $1,000 a month to rent a warehouse that contained more cars and ATVs, agents said.
Among the evidence Seltzer mentioned in deciding to keep Boyd locked up was another federal judge's 2007 ruling that Boyd "showed a fundamental lack of respect for the law" and that his testimony about how he purchased a $320,000 home and a BMW was not credible and violated the terms of his release from federal prison. Boyd declared $250,000 income last year, and his girlfriend, who has not been charged, was paid $144,000 from the clinic though she has not worked there since 2009, agents testified.Boyd also funneled money to other family members employed at the clinic, prosecutors said. Boyd ran a neighboring business, Fleet Media, where some of the pill mill money was kept, agents said.
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and Broward Sheriff's Office began an undercover investigation of the clinic in 2012, and a manager told an undercover agent it made about $10,000 a day charging new patients $350 a visit and $250 for follow-ups.In wiretapped phone calls in late 2012, agents said they reaped evidence that staff were making fake Florida identification cards for patients from out of state and creating false MRI reports to help make the clinic seem legitimate.
A doctor who worked at the clinic and is also charged in the indictment told agents that 60 to 70 percent of the business was not legitimate. "Dr. Vijay Chowdhary told agents that it would be medically impossible for patients to take the amounts of oxycodone that were being prescribed and to survive," Seltzer wrote.
"Given Boyd's disregard of the court's directives and supervision, his lack of respect for the law, his unaccounted-for wealth, the strong evidence of his guilt and the lengthy sentence he would face upon conviction, [I do] not believe that he would be likely to appear if released on bond," Judge Seltzer wrote. "Against the backdrop of his criminal record, Boyd's oxycodone operation cannot properly be viewed as an isolated instance of misjudgment."

Back in the 1970s, the Boyd Brothers John Darrell Boyd and Tracey Boyd were among the most flamboyant traffickers in the region. After they were indicted in 1977 on charges they smuggled massive amounts of pot from Colombia through Florida, the brothers fled and hid for years before they were caught and served prison terms.
Earlier this month, Darrell's son, Jason Boyd, 43, of Davie, was arrested on charges he masterminded a "cash cow" pill mill conspiracy that illegally prescribed oxycodone pain pills to "patients" and drug dealers. If convicted of drug and money-laundering charges, Boyd faces up to 30 years in prison and forfeiture of more than $4.25 million, two homes and other assets.
The same family once embroiled in the notorious marijuana flows through South Florida in the 1970s is now suspected of getting caught up in the region's latest form of drug abuse. One judge called the latest allegation far more than "an isolated instance of misjudgment."
Though neither Boyd's father nor uncle have been charged with anything related to the clinic, agents heard them talking on phone calls that were secretly intercepted, prosecutors said during a detention hearing for Jason Boyd last week in federal court in Fort Lauderdale.
Boyd employed "virtually his entire family" at the Intracoastal Medical Groups Inc. clinic on Intracoastal Drive, which brought in $1.5 million a year and prescribed 1.3 million highly addictive pain pills, federal prosecutor Julia Vaglienti told the judge.
One family member's job was to make sure that patients with out-of-state license plates parked in the nearby Galleria Mall parking lot to avoid drawing attention to the clinic, federal authorities said. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and Broward Sheriff's Office began an undercover investigation of the clinic in 2012, and a manager told an undercover agent it made about $10,000 a day charging new patients $350 a visit and $250 for follow-ups.In wiretapped phone calls in late 2012, agents said they reaped evidence that staff were making fake Florida identification cards for patients from out of state and creating false MRI reports to help make the clinic seem legitimate.
A doctor who worked at the clinic and is also charged in the indictment told agents that 60 to 70 percent of the business was not legitimate. "Dr. Vijay Chowdhary told agents that it would be medically impossible for patients to take the amounts of oxycodone that were being prescribed and to survive," Seltzer wrote.
"Given Boyd's disregard of the court's directives and supervision, his lack of respect for the law, his unaccounted-for wealth, the strong evidence of his guilt and the lengthy sentence he would face upon conviction, [I do] not believe that he would be likely to appear if released on bond," Judge Seltzer wrote. "Against the backdrop of his criminal record, Boyd's oxycodone operation cannot properly be viewed as an isolated instance of misjudgment."

Before long we were fixed into our more typical way of shooting - aperture priority mode selected, thumbwheel used to stop up or down - but snapping away was a combination of tapping the touchscreen for compact-camera-like focus, along with using the included electronic viewfinder as we would with a DSLR or similar all-in CSC.
There are significant benefits to the Android operating system too - not least connectivity and sharing which, again, we'll address in more detail later - that quickly come into play. Simple things come to mind: press and drag on an image in playback while zoomed in to get a close-up look of the important parts at absolute size - which saves the faff with lots of buttons and directional-pad controls. Everything operates through the touchscreen, the gallery is far more organised than any other camera we've seen and apps loaded into the 16GB of internal storage can directly load up images to work with.

Mosaic of memories
It really doesn't work, not least because it's far too smugly content
with its artifice. And how funny that a fictional film about magic
can't touch a documentary such as Stories We Tell for sleight of hand.
Sarah Polley's film has only the truth to play with, but what she does
with the truth is fairly magical.
The young Canadian actress has turned her talents to directing with, two accomplished dramas to date, both centred on relationships: Away From Her dealt with the pressure on an elderly couple when one develops Alzheimer's; Take This Waltz the schism created when a young wife falls in love with another man.
This, her first documentary, has much in common with those films, as it focuses on unravelling the mysteries of a marriage. What gives the film particular potency is that the marriage in question is that of her own parents C one of whom, her mother, is long dead C and that very little about the Polley family is as it seems at first.
The film opens with a quote from Canadian author Margaret Atwood: "When you're in the middle of a story, it isn't a story at all, but only a confusion.Virtual indoorpositioningsystem logo Verano Place logo." Polley is about to prove that point.

The initial impression is of an outgoing, fun-loving woman with infectious energy and a memorable laugh, but also of a marriage built on odd foundations. Diane, a sometime actress, first saw Michael when he was playing Mick in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker, falling in love with the dark, mysterious character as much as the actor playing him,Did you know that buymosaic chains can be used for more than just business. who by his own admission was far less interesting in real life.
And so "a woman of secrets" is revealed, never as fulfilled as her exuberant exterior may have suggested. But just as we feel this is the limit of the film's investigation, Diane dies and the real story kicks into gear, with a wave of revelations C both from life and in the way that Polley is constructing her story C that make this an altogether more fascinating animal.
Some of the facts that surprise us (the least said, the better) were always well-known within the family, but Polley has delayed them in order to create maximum effect. Others were more recently learned, the result of her own investigations. All the details are subtly contradicted by the interviewees, each with their own recollection and perspective.
The result is a mosaic of memory and truth, with the joins C or the cracks C visible. It's compelling stuff. The Polleys and their friends are an articulate, charming bunch, all of whom know how to spin a yarn. For her part, Polley leads her determined "interrogation" with youthful vigour. There are flaws, not least the fact that we learn nothing about the cancer that took her mother, or of Sarah's own childhood memories of her. Nevertheless, this is an ambitious, touching, challenging contribution to what is fast becoming a golden age of experimental documentary.
With its mission clock at nine years and counting, Opportunity is still uncovering secrets on Mars. The robot was last based at thesouthern tip of the "Cape York" segment of the 14-mile-wide (22 kilometers) Endeavour crater, and is now on its way to a spot called "Solander Point." Even Ansar al-Shariah members, many of whom have waged jihad abroad, have shown a capacity to move away from extremism C at least publicly. Although the Tunisian authorities believe that some members still have links to terrorism, Ansar al-Shariah has tried to outwardly distance itself from violence. In February, Abu Ayad, the head of Ansar al-Shariah, expressed his wish that young Tunisians refrain from traveling to Syria to engage in jihad there, and to focus on engaging in peaceful action at home.
In a BBC interview in June, the head of the Ansar al-Shariahs youth wing stressed that his was a peaceful group focused on preaching and charity activities. Ansar al-Shariah is eager to cultivate a peaceful image not just because it fears government reprisals, but also in order to avoid alienating those of its members who are against violence in Tunisia. It is, after all, a disconnected movement that relies on dozens of charismatic leaders to exploit everyday discontent at the grassroots level of Tunisian society.
If nonjihadist Salafists support peaceful action for the long haul, they can in turn reach out to Tunisians who are vulnerable to the seduction of Salafist jihadism. But their powers of dissuasion will depend on their ability to prove that their brand of Salafism is superior.
Politically inclined Salafists must show that they can be more effective actors than Salafist jihadists can. In this regard, Salafist political parties have a much harder task than groups such as Ansar al-Shariah. These parties must prove their ability to shape political decisions, rather than simply blasting more energy into street politics.
Currently, Ansar al-Shariah has proven more successful in appealing to disenfranchised Tunisians.Solar Sister is a network of women who sell cleaningservicesydney to communities that don't have access to electricity. A large portion of its members are young and it has a robust and well-organized youth wing. Crucially, its emphasis on grassroots action provides unemployed youth with the opportunity to feel empowered. By contrast, the youth activities of political parties are much less visible. Jabhat al-Islahs Facebook page, for instance, is dominated by pictures of middle-aged men. Similarly, older wise men provide the face of scientific Salafism. As a result, these movements hold only limited appeal for Tunisian youths.

Politically inclined Salafists must show that they can be more effective actors than Salafist jihadists can. In this regard, Salafist political parties have a much harder task than groups such as Ansar al-Shariah. These parties must prove their ability to shape political decisions, rather than simply blasting more energy into street politics.

Dubai eGovernment ready for smart government

According to the latest Google study, he said the UAE is in the lead worldwide with 62 per cent smartphone penetration rate and 18 per cent growth rate annually.
Bin Humaidan added: We hereby confirm our full readiness to respond to the requirements of the new stage, which is an extension to the eTransformation of eGovernment that we began 13 years ago. Together, with our government partners, we have already developed many applications that represent a starting point for the provision of more creative applications, thanks to our unique experience of leading the first eGovernment in the region.
We will support our partners with a modern infrastructure, a secure unified government information network, sophisticated platforms and government resources planning systems that are currently being used by 42 Dubai government entities for managing their internal resources in a highly efficient manner. In addition, we have shared services that are optimised by these entities for providing their services to the public. These services are enablers that will inevitably integrate with the requirements of achieving the smart governments objectives.

While federal officials insist it wasn't aimed at anyone in the U.S., others fear that information from people in this country could have been scooped up in the surveillance effort.
One of the biggest worries is what happens to the massive amount of data retailers clandestinely gather on customers, through devices that monitor everything from their buying habits to their movements in stores. Some of that information can be highly personal. The New York Times reported last year that Target assigns women shoppers "a pregnancy prediction" score based on their purchases, which is used to guess if they're expecting and how far along their pregnancy is, so that appropriate products can be marketed to them.
Ahmad bin Humaidan, Director-General of Dubai eGovernment, announced the department's commitment to the instructions of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
He said: Shaikh Mohammeds initiative is based on the leaderships keenness on customer satisfaction through round-the-clock government services using the latest technologies based on a clear understanding of their needs, while leveraging the mobile phone; which has become one of the most widespread devices in the world.
According to the latest Google study, he said the UAE is in the lead worldwide with 62 per cent smartphone penetration rate and 18 per cent growth rate annually.
Bin Humaidan added: We hereby confirm our full readiness to respond to the requirements of the new stage, which is an extension to the eTransformation of eGovernment that we began 13 years ago. Together, with our government partners, we have already developed many applications that represent a starting point for the provision of more creative applications, thanks to our unique experience of leading the first eGovernment in the region.
We will support our partners with a modern infrastructure, a secure unified government information network, sophisticated platforms and government resources planning systems that are currently being used by 42 Dubai government entities for managing their internal resources in a highly efficient manner. In addition, we have shared services that are optimised by these entities for providing their services to the public. These services are enablers that will inevitably integrate with the requirements of achieving the smart governments objectives.

As for implementing the transformation into smart government, he said: We have recently launched My ID initiative, which will allow customers a unified access to all the eServices provided by Dubai government entities via smartphones or the Internet by means of only one identification that eliminates the need for customers to register with each government entity separately.
