A new store where one-of-a-kind art will be sold, and where customers
wil be invited to make art, is now open in downtown Amherst.Art Alive,
at 35 South Pleasant St., is the brainchild of Tamzeena Hutchinson of
Amherst, who describes her business model as one that brings people of
all ages together in support of making art.
We envision it as
being a space for people in our community to come together and get to
know each other while experiencing hands-on arts and crafts, Hutchinson
said.Art Alive is, in part, like a live Etsy, the online resource where
artists can sell their products, according to Hutchinson. But it will
also have space to host birthday parties, bridal showers and art
workshops and an area where children and parents can do crafts.
Along
the brick walls and on the brightly colored shelves, painted in gem
turquoise, Hawaiian passion and peacock feather, she estimates that
about 40 different items are on sale that include gifts and home decor.
Jewelry, photographs and paintings, leatherwork, including belts and
purses, as well as clocks and pillows are offered.
Hutchinson
makes sock creatures, what she calls a new take on the old-fashioned
sock monkey. She also makes wallets, moccasins and purses, and recently
created hand-made stools from concrete and wooden dowels that will serve
as seating for customers and which may also be sold.
Since
2010, Hutchinson has been operating Soundscape Imaging, a screenprinting
and embroidery business that produces hats, T-shirts and banners, among
other items. That business now will be housed at Art Alive.Hutchinson,
who is also a partner in Explore Disc Golf, said the idea of developing
Art Alive came to her a few months ago.
As a parent of an
11-year-old daughter, she said she dreamed of a place where pre-teens
would have something to do, and the opportunity to offer do-it-yourself
crafts kits was one element of this. I realized that we dont have a

said her daughter is into crafts and already makes decorative pens that

The stage, the lighting, the setting and the background gave such a tranquil effect and almost made me feel like I was transported to a world of beautiful magical tales. The very fact that most of the music played during the play was created by the actors on stage with such creative use of props like water cans and bottles was laudable.
Honestly, the background score itself was so good that I just did not want it to end. The effects created by the actors on stage made the story so convincing and seem so real.
The actors did not wear fancy clothes nor was the story extraordinarily unusual and complex, but there wasnt a point through the play where I felt bored. I simply wanted the story to go on and not stop. In short, a brilliantly executed play, unconventional and fabulous use of props and the stage, absolutely mind blowing direction and a fantastic performance by the actors. Two curries (of goat and duck) were mild and delicious and made intelligent use of pineapple and lime respectively to provide a good foil to the meat. Concerns about the inadequate protection of intellectual property have also raised tensions, prompting 170 members of the US Congress to sign a letter complaining that Indian policies could have a significant negative impact on jobs and investment in the US. To succeed over a period of time, New Delhi must offer investors greater policy and regulatory stability, which will allow private capital to develop growth opportunities.
Notwithstanding the political atmospherics, India would be well-advised to implement structural reforms to build confidence and challenge the perception that it is either hostile toor thoroughly ambivalent towardsforeign investors. For example, India has been slow to raise the caps on foreign direct investment (FDI), deciding only recently to liberalize norms across a dozen sectors, while still leaving some capital-starved areas untouched. This lethargy has frustrated those with capital and may have the effect of depriving Indias large middle class of higher quality, lower-cost goods and services.
One logical next step would be to raise the FDI cap in insurance from 26 to 49%. Parliamentary approval of this change will enable international companies to help meet the burgeoning demand for affordable insurance products, especially in currently underserved rural and semi-urban communities. In addition to these direct benefits, insurers and pension funds are significant investors in infrastructure, a critical component of long-term economic growth (full disclosure: an international consortium of insurance companies is among the clients of the Albright Stonebridge group, which I chair).
Insurance reform may seem to be a relatively small piece of a much larger puzzle, but a change in one sector can have a disproportionately positive impact on overall investor perceptions. During my recent visit to New Delhi, I found that this is an area where leaders from both major parties agree that increasing the FDI cap would be beneficial. The challenge now is to transform this consensus in principle into the reality of legislative action.
In the months ahead, Indias decisions will determine for better or worse the level of investor confidence; this, in turn, will decide whether the countrys economy returns to high growth rates or continues to stall. The outcome of this process will have immediate implications for millions of Indian workers who are eager to improve living standards for their families.

Search called off for asylum seekers missing at sea

It just says that you must tell everyone if you do: the assumption being that consumers will righteously reject products manufactured in such a manner. Perhaps they will too. The same is true of animal friendly farming, organic, free range and all of those other variations of production methods. If you think theyre important then you really should exercise your consumer sovereignty by putting your money where your mouth is: purchase those you approve of and boycott those you do not.

But I would insist that you should follow your mores in how you spend your money and your time: its exactly this that makes the whole market system tick, what makes it work as well as it does. You may not recognize Teddy Wells, but theres a good chance youve
laid eyes on him before. Hes appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows
shot in Hawaii. The reason his face isnt more familiar is because its
often a blur, or a quick blip, or a dot in the distance. Sometimes, just
the back of his head makes it onto the screen. Sometimes, hes cut out
of a scene altogether. Such is the inglorious life of the hard-working
background actor.
Teddy has been doing backgroundthe nice way of saying, being an extrain Hawaii for 15 years. Hes played a bellhop on Fantasy Island, an African villager in ER, an Islander in Last Resort and a poacher in Tears of the Sun. He was a cop driving an ATV on the beach in Baywatch Hawaii. He was the passenger in the pickup truck that swerved to avoid hitting a cow in Mighty Joe Young. He was the guy in the hotel lobby that Damon Wayans accidentally bumped into in My Wife and Kids. He was the porter on the dock who unloaded Matthew Brodericks bags in Godzilla. In Hawaii Five-0, he milled around in the background at the airport. In Lost, he played, among other parts, a dead airline passenger.
Often, hes utterly anonymous. Other times hes clearly, if briefly, identifiable. You can see him in Battleship as a Navy officer standing at attention behind Liam Neesom on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri. Thats clearly him as a native guide leading Lily Tomlin through the jungle in Krippendorfs Tribe. Thats definitely Teddy, with a rifle, chasing some of Losts main characters down the beach and into the woods.
Throughout his whole career in the background, hes been quietly observing how films are made and soaking up as much as he can about how the motion picture industry works. One thing hes learned is that extras dont always get a whole lot of respect. Hes worked on sets where they have been made to wait for hours in the sun without shade or water, talked to like children and moved around like cattle. But hes also been on sets where the extras were treated royally, allowed to relax in air-conditioned tents, and served meals on actual china with real silverware, rather than the paper plates and plastic utensils they usually get.
For all of his efforts, Teddy generally makes $135 a day, the rate that members of the Screen Actors Guild, such as himself, get for background. Non-union extras are lucky if they make $100 a day.
In Hawaii, you wont make $5,000 a year being an extra, says Teddy, who has made his living as a chef, a smoothie shop franchisee and an online coffee distributor.
What drives him then? What draws him to back to the background, again and again? Is it the dream of stardom? The promise of screen credit? As Teddy recalls the conversation, Broderick told him: Right now, everybody is watching you and me talking, and they all want to be you, standing here talking to me. Everybody wants to be in the position that youre in, and if they see the weakness in you, they will do whatever it takes to highlight it. Always remember, nobody here is your friend.
The other reason Teddy minimizes the socializing is the same reason he doesnt bring reading material, crossword puzzles or anything like that to the set, as extras typically do to kill time. He spends his down time watching and learning. Most of the time, if youre an extra, they dont mind you hanging around the set if youre paying attention, he says.
If an extra is going to be plucked from the obscurity of the background and given an upgrade, its not going to be the extra reading the newspaper, playing Angry Birds or chitchatting with the other extras. Its going to be the extra whos been paying attention and is ready to go. Upgrades do happen. I admit that my opinions lean toward those of Judges. Ironically, an anti-Judge letter appeared in the April 29 issue of The Star right below a simplistic and witless McCoy cartoon attacking President Barack Obama and those who qualify for food stamps, a federal program of longstanding that has helped feed families and support the agriculture industry.
The camera system throughout downtown Carlisle is also a point of concern since dispatchers are responsible for monitoring the system as calls permit and for actively monitoring live incidents on the 16 current cameras and the 42 scheduled to be added through the Cumberland County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, according to Margesons memo.

Recently, several letters have been published on the opinion page criticizing Lee Judges and Glenn McCoys work as biased. But that misses the point. These cartoons represent opinions and are therefore by definition biased.
I admit that my opinions lean toward those of Judges. Ironically, an anti-Judge letter appeared in the April 29 issue of The Star right below a simplistic and witless McCoy cartoon attacking President Barack Obama and those who qualify for food stamps, a federal program of longstanding that has helped feed families and support the agriculture industry.
The camera system throughout downtown Carlisle is also a point of concern since dispatchers are responsible for monitoring the system as calls permit and for actively monitoring live incidents on the 16 current cameras and the 42 scheduled to be added through the Cumberland County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, according to Margesons memo.
Carlisle Police Department never would have recommended the system if dispatch elimination was even being considered, Margeson wrote.
Candlands report said county dispatchers have indicated that camera feeds could be streamed to the 911 center. The proposed administrative employees that would be hired could still monitor the cameras while keeping the police station open to the public from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.
Switching to county dispatch would require Carlisle police to convert to the county radio system, which would offer interoperability with municipal police departments, fire departments, emergency medical services and other agencies during an emergency, according to Candlands report. This would provide offers with additional back-up for emergency events.
Since the department already has 34 county radios, switching to the county system would require the purchase of an additional 16 mobile radios and six portable radios. Each mobile radio would cost $9,000 and portable radios would cost $3,000 each for a total of $162,000 for new radios, according to the report.
Margeson wrote, however, the county radio system is not as reliable as the one used by the Carlisle Police Department, which is also shared with Dickinson College and Carlisle Area School District. Interoperability with other agencies isnt a problem because the headquarters has a county radio and each car is equipped with a portable county radio.

Israel asking Argentina if it stopped inquiry into Jewish centre bombings to appease Iran
Israel wants clarifications from Argentina over a report it offered Iran a deal: It would stop investigating bombings on Jewish centres there in the 1990s in exchange for better trade ties, an Israeli foreign ministry official said Sunday.
The Argentine paper Perfil quoted a leaked Iranian Cable Ties on Saturday detailing the offer.
Eighty-five people were killed and 200 were injured when a bomb exploded in a van outside the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association on July 18, 1994 — that country's bloodiest terrorist attack.
The centre, a symbol for Argentina's Jewish population of more than 200,000, was destroyed two years after a bomb flattened the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29 people.
Argentine officials claim that Iran orchestrated the attacks and that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group carried it out. The United States and Israel also say Iran was behind the bombings, but Iran has denied it.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Sunday he is waiting for official Argentine comment. "If this is true, then it would be a display of infinite cynicism and a dishonour to the dead." he said.
Israeli media reported that Israel was considering postponing an visit by Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman until clarifications are made.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry has not commented.
The paper quoted a report sent by Iran's Foreign Relations Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that said, "Argentina is no longer interested in solving those two attacks, but in exchange prefers improving its economic relations with Iran."
According to the article, Timerman made the offer via Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in a meeting in the Syrian city of Aleppo in January.
The details of that conversation were later conveyed to Ahmadinejad by his foreign minister, the paper said.
The paper did not say how it obtained the leaked cables.

Cabby already dead when
SINGAPORE - When cabby Yuen Swee Hong, 58, failed to return to his Serangoon home
from his shift on April 11, 2009, Madam Chan Oi Lin called her husband's mobile phone
and was met with a threat from a man with a mainland Chinese accent.
He said that he had kidnapped Mr Yuen and that the cabby "is going to die".
He demanded $150,000 in ransom.
But unknown to Mdm Chan, her husband was probably already dead.
Opening the prosecutor's case in the High Court murder trial against Chinese national
Wang Wenfeng, 32, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Eugene Lee also told the court that
the cabby had up to five stab wounds on his shirt and his taxi - found in a multi-
storey carpark in Canberra Link - was splattered with blood.
DPP Lee added that it was Wang who led the police to Mr Yuen's decomposed body,
hidden in a forested area in Sembawang on April 17, 2009.
He also led the police into a forested area at Nee Soon Road where a haversack
containing two knives and other items such as gloves, cable ties and nylon rope were
found.
In court, Mdm Chan recalled the shock and anguish when the ransom demand was made.
The widow told the court that she received another call and managed to reduce the
ransom amount to $80,000.
Their son alerted the police.
The next day, Mdm Chan and the male caller settled on a sum of $5,000, to be
delivered at Marsiling MRT station.
There, she received a text message to remit the money into a China Construction Bank
account.
She refused as she wanted to hear her husband's voice first.
She waited there for many hours without avail and went home.
The man called again and asked her if she had remitted the money.
"I replied again that I did not know how to do so. He replied that he did not care
and ended the call abruptly. That was the last time I heard from the male caller,"
said Mdm Chan.
The vctim's brother, Mr Yuen Peng Yin, who was with Mdm Chan at that time, told the
court that they did not remit the money as they thought it was a scam.
Wang's wife, Mdm Gong Wenying, testified that her husband "was stressed over money"
and "appeared to be desperate" to raise money for his mother's cancer treatment.
Wang, a general worker, had also mentioned selling his organs to raise money.
"I was not sure if he was serious but I advised him that we had time to make money as
we were still young," said Mdm Gong.
Wang's co-tenant, Mr Chen Yongquan, said that on April 10 - the night before the
alleged murder - Wang left the flat with a haversack and claimed that Wang said he
"needed to do something outside".
When Mr Chen commented that it was already late, Wang replied "robbery".
"I thought he was joking," said Mr Chen.
Wang was arrested at People's Park Complex on April 13, 2009 after he collected a
one-way ticket to Xiamen, China.

Technology use enables shift in TV watching
asked for your help when I first wrote about people who stream video from the Internet
to their TVs, in some cases cutting ties completely with cable and satellite providers.
It seems like a big shift in technology use.
Boy, did I get help. More than 100 readers sent e-mails explaining how they're digging
through the various Internet-based providers of movies, TV shows and sports. And they
told me how they're moving content from the Internet to their TVs.
I'll keep trying new content providers and testing the hardware needed to put that
content on big screens in our homes.
I use both an Internet-enabled Blu-ray DVD player as well as a device called Boxee to
stream video to my HDTV. In both cases, these devices connect to the Internet
wirelessly. Both also have the ability to be connected by ethernet cable.
I have preliminary recommendations for those of you who haven't tried Internet-based
content.
If you're interested only in connecting to some of the big-name players in this new
field – maybe sampling the Internet-based content from Netflix, YouTube and Hulu Plus
– then a DVD player with Internet connectivity has powerful pluses. I heard from
plenty of readers who love the simplicity of a DVD player.
It's easy to set up, easy to use. And DVD players aren't expensive. I found the Sony
BDP-S570 I use on sale for $140.
Getting my own DVD player working with my wireless router wasn't challenging. I just
followed the on-screen prompts to connect it to the Internet. Within five minutes, it
was working. I just scroll through the list of content providers available and click a
button to watch.
But some of what I want to see isn't available from the limited menu offered by the DVD
player. That's where the Boxee comes in. Unlike the DVD player, which is limited to
preinstalled applications such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and others, the Boxee can
do a lot more.
With a built-in Web browser, it broadens the amount of video I can watch, stuff I can't
get on the DVD player. For instance, I can use the Boxee's remote and type in
www.rte.ie and sample website-streamed Irish television.
I like the fact that the remote has a full keyboard; it also comes in handy when I use
Boxee's browser to do searches and other Internet chores on the big screen.
Especially during the first few days, using the Boxee isn't as easy as connecting with
the DVD player. And it has other liabilities, too. The service has been setting
deadlines for including Netflix in its offerings and missing those deadlines.
There are two big-name players I haven't tried at all.
One, the Roku, drew rave reviews from several of you. Like the DVD players I mentioned,
it's easy to use but offers more sources for TV shows and movies. And readers who have
tried various ways to connect tell me the video quality is even better than what I'm
experiencing from the DVD player or my Boxee.
I'll try to get my hands on a Roku unit to see why it's so appealing to so many of you.

with the DVD players. Unlike my Boxee, it doesn't include a Web browser.
