A new store where one-of-a-kind art will be sold, and where customers wil be invited to make art, is now open in downtown Amherst.Art Alive, at 35 South Pleasant St., is the brainchild of Tamzeena Hutchinson of Amherst, who describes her business model as one that brings people of all ages together in support of making art.

Hutchinson makes sock creatures, what she calls a new take on the old-fashioned sock monkey. She also makes wallets, moccasins and purses, and recently created hand-made stools from concrete and wooden dowels that will serve as seating for customers and which may also be sold.

Since 2010, Hutchinson has been operating Soundscape Imaging, a screenprinting and embroidery business that produces hats, T-shirts and banners, among other items. Mike Petrowski, general manager of the company's timing products division, believes quartz has had its day. "It only works on one frequency," he said, "it has long lead times and one of the biggest headaches is the supply chain." While the approach C called DSPLL C removed the need for unique crystals to generate specific frequencies and simplified the supply chain, the process still created multi-die products. Meanwhile, the industry was beginning to look at MEMS technology as a potential replacement for quartz, with companies such as Discera, SiTime and Epson undertaking some of the early work. Also making inroads into the technology was IDT with its pMEMS based products. 

An acquisition made in 2010 brought Silicon Labs into the race. It bought Silicon Clocks, an early stage company creating MEMS based timing technology. Its CMEMS C standing for cmos plus MEMS C technology allowed MEMS resonators and other sensor structures to be created directly on standard cmos wafers. The approach did away with the need for special semiconductor processing for the MEMS elements and addressed performance, integration and size issues. It also addressed parasitics and packaging issues. 

The Si50x range is said by Silicon Labs to feature the most highly integrated MEMS based oscillators currently available. The result is timing devices which are guaranteed to have a frequency stability of 20ppm over 10 years, along with high shock and vibration resistance. 

One of the issues which CMEMS technology addresses is that of temperature drift. Previously, MEMS based resonators have seen their frequencies drift by up within the range from -30 to 40ppm/C. Petrowski claims the CMEMS based parts will show temperature related frequency drift of 2ppm/C. "One of the technology's key features is passive temperature compensation," he noted, "and this comes as a result of the resonator being made from SiGe and SiO2. 

"These materials have different temperature performance," he explained. "SiGe gets harder as the temperature drops, while SiO2 gets softer. The interaction between the two materials means frequency drift due to temperature is minimised." 

In terms of construction, the resonator is made from SiGe, but features SiO2 slits (see fig 3). Silicon Labs says this composite material approach provides passive compensation, while the supporting cmos system compensates for remaining frequency drift over the operating life of the product. "Typically," said Petrowski, "Si50x devices show a frequency error of less than 7ppm across the industrial temperature range." 

The four devices launched initially are: the Si501, a single frequency device with output enable (OE) functionality; the Si502, a dual frequency oscillator with OE and frequency select (FS) functionality; the Si503, quad frequency oscillator with FS technology; and the Si504, a fully programmable oscillator said to support all potential configurations. The parts are available in four pin DFN packages measuring 2 x 2.5mm, 2.5 x 3.2mm and 3.2 x 5mm.

How scrappers stole a church congregation’s dream

Keith Hill had a dream for his church. Vetal is an older school, a place of blackboards and erasers and bells that ring. Most classrooms have built-in bookshelves and hardwood floors. A decorative tile alcove near the main office honors the building’s first principal. Bathroom plumbing is encased in marble. And it was pristine, Hill said. Perfect condition.

It took a long time to negotiate a purchase agreement, but by the winter of 2012, Hill felt things were falling into place. He was ready to take possession, but the neighbors had started to notice intruders had gotten into the building – tracks in the snow, people hanging around.

“The (Detroit Public Schools) police would respond if you saw something,” Hill said. “They still had cameras around. But you had to see them.”

What happened next has happened all over Detroit, as emptying buildings – houses, businesses, schools like Vetal – have become a source of quick cash for metal thieves looking to steal whatever they can. Many aren’t worth much to begin with, and stripped of fixtures, their value plummets even further.

Scrappers have a reputation as bottom feeders, but Hill believes at least some are skilled professionals. He doesn’t know how anyone other than an experienced electrician could get into the transformer room at Vetal Elementary and steal so much of the equipment without being electrocuted.

The state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has announced upcoming changes to the parking privileges law for individuals with disabilities and a new procedure for issuing wheelchair-symbol placards and license plates so that those with disabilities can find designated parking spaces when needed, according to a press release.

For New Jerseyans with a disability, these designated parking spaces can mean the difference between being able to comfortably go to a store or a doctor, MVC Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez said. These changes to the parking privileges law will better serve those who truly need them, while also preventing future abuse of the placard and license plate program.

Effective Aug. 1, state law will require that the qualifying medical condition of a person with a disability be recertified every three years in order to obtain a new placard to hang from the rear-view mirror of their vehicle or the vehicle they are riding in. The new certification needs to be completed by a qualified medical practitioner and must indicate that the qualifying disability continues to exist.

Motorists who currently hold these unique parking privileges will not need to submit recertification documentation until their current privileges are due for renewal.

Renewal notices will continue to be sent out every three years, said Martinez. At that time, the medical recertification and new application forms, found on our website, will need to be completed and submitted at any of our 39 agencies or by mail. Law enforcement has been advised to honor the current placards until customers have been through the renewal process.

The winds blow in forceful, frightening gusts, wafting a fine vapour of sand into the air. Visitors stand in awe with tousled up hair and billowing skirts. It feels like you are in a remote frontier, facing wild and unknown possibilities C its exhilarating. Perhaps this was what Ferdinand Magellan, fabled to have stopped here during his circumnavigation of the globe, felt those many years ago.

It hadnt always been such a solitary place, though. The name, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau itself is derived from the Rungus words sampang mangazo referring to the great battles once fought here in the 18th and 19th centuries by the locals. According to legend, the coast was a favourite landing point for looting pirates, and Rungus warriors bravely fought them off in bloody battles to protect their land. Tanjung Simpang Mengayau then became the perfect lookout point for incoming pirate attacks.

Tampat Do Aman is a low-impact jungle camp located at the fringe of the Sabah state forest reserve and just 10 to 20 minutes walk to the Kalampunian Beach. NASA astronaut admits spacesuit water

The mysterious leak that cut a spacewalk short two weeks ago was apparently as frightening as it looked to those of us watching on NASA TV.On July 16, NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and his European colleague Luca Parmitano hustled back inside the International Space Station after water began filling Parmitano's helmet, making it hard for the Italian astronaut to hear and see. Both spacewalkers kept their cool, and everything turned out fine. But they didn't stay trapped back there for long.

"Once the water got big enough that it went all the way around and started coming outside the edge of the white plastic piece, then it saturated his communication cap, and sort of capillary flow just brought the water all around his head," Cassidy explained, using Parmitano's helmet as a visual aid."He had water filled up in his ear cups, and it started to creep into his eyes and covered his nose," Cassidy added.

Exactly why this happened remains unclear; engineers are still working to determine the cause of the leak. NASA has also appointed an expert panel to investigate the issue and help make sure it doesn't happen again."The mishap investigation board will look more broadly at past operations and maintenance, quality assurance, aspects of flight control and other organizational factors," NASA officials wrote last week upon announcing the board, which will begin its work on Friday. Project aims to eliminate paper pollution

Willow daisies. Tissue roses. White flags in the woods. No matter how clean the euphemism used, the problem along the upper Kenai River remains a dirty one, and theres no sanitized way to relieve the need to talk around it: Human waste pollution.Talking about poop doesnt really play with a lot of people. They dont want to talk about it. But we need to start having that conversation to make it publicly palatable to have. And then, hopefully, we can influence change, said Bobbie Jo Kolodziejski,You can design your turquoisebeads or select one of our pose. with the U.S. Forest Service and Kenai River Special Management Areas interagency coordinator of the upper Kenai River area. 

The entire length of the Kenai River is a magnet for recreation, drawing people to its waters and banks in search of fish, scenic views or bird and wildlife sightings. The lower Kenai River, where use of boats with motors is allowed, is more urbanized, in a sense. Its more heavily used, with a host of boat launches and bank-fishing access points that are open to the public and often complete with restroom facilities. Even in places with no toilet available, its fairly easy to access one by a quick boat trip to the nearest launch site, then a quick walk up the trail and/or drive back to town. 

Not so on the upper river, in the Cooper Landing area downstream to Sterling. Boat launches are fewer and farther between. Walk-in access points and stand-and-fish spots are often undeveloped. And its drift-boat only, where a float trip can be four to eight hours between one public-use facility and the next. There inevitably are times when the need to go fish coincides with the need to go when theres nothing but wilderness around. 

So you take a rest break, make a pit stop, visit the woods, pop a squat, take care of business. And all to often, the leavings are left behind.We know its a problem, we see the waste out there. Its usually toilet paper piles, thats the remnants that you see. It occurs everywhere from the Kenai bridge at the outlet of Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing all the way down the river, Kolodziejski said. 

The issue has existed probably as long as recreational use of the river. Kolodziejski remembers transect surveys being conducted in the 1990s to monitor the occurrence of toilet-paper piles found along the river. And the issue was even mentioned in an early Kenai National Wildlife Refuge management plan for the area.It showed that in 1948 when the first refuge manager reported to duty on the Kenai refuge, human waste management was already being recognized as a problem. So when I saw that I was like, Whoa, geeze, lets do something about this, she said. 

But what? The problem reeks of complications that render it easily deferred. Number one, its unpleasant to discuss. Number two, formal solutions would be difficult and costly to construct. Two-seat vaulted toilets, like the sort at most campgrounds and boat launches in the area, can run upwards of $80,000 to install. Less-costly options, like portable toilets, would be difficult to the point of unfeasible to deliver, maintain and remove along the mostly undeveloped upper river corridor. 

It just has always seemed to fall on the priority list, especially when you have other pressing things come about, like bear conflicts, Kolodziejski said.Recently, a new effort is underfoot to minimize the toilet paper and related undesirables underfoot along the upper river. Kolodziejski said that the land managers for the area the forest service, the refuge, Alaska State Parks and Native organizations, are taking renewed interest in the issue, with the Kenai River Special Management Area board focusing more specifically on it. 

We wanted to start raising awareness of managing human waste along the river in sensitive ways, she said. At the same time, the KRSMA Advisory Board would like to be working over the next many years together in looking at what infrastructure needs are out there maybe its temporary or permanent structures to eliminate the human waste and toilet paper out on the landscape, or maybe its other infrastructure. 

While studding the upper river with toilets every couple miles is unlikely, there are other infrastructure options. On the Gulkana River, for example, boaters take portable toilets often called wag bags with them, with designated disposal sites provided. Rafters on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon are required to use something similar, and theres a service that sanitizes the portable receptacles at the end of the trip.

But on the upper Kenai, those standards dont quite apply. Stay 200 feet away from the water, for sure. And pack out toilet paper. But dont do not, Kolodziejski repeats dig cat holes.The problem is that there are archeological sites along the upper Kenai of cultural and historic significance to the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Kolodziejski said. The Denaina Natives had fish camps at several sites along the river, long before Western anglers started coming to the Kenai, and there are house pits and food caches remaining as testament to the significance of the area to the local indigenous peoples. Any sort of digging in the area could disturb sensitive archeological areas. 

Around the same time of the renewed KRSMA Advisory Board interest in human waste management, an AmeriCorps project started up that dovetails nicely.Last year Raven AmeriCorps members Kristine Route and Kristin Fuller, based in Cooper Landing, began a survey of people in the area to determine their environmental concerns. Waste management was mentioned again and again.Upon talking to people and having them fill out these surveys, it seemed the number-one thing people were concerned about was the amount of human feces left on riverbanks and trailheads and the amount of trash people leave behind, Route said. 

To investigate further,The term 'casesforhtcone control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag. they monitored a popular beach recreation area on Kenai Lake last summer. They did a cleanup, then took pictures of the area.In June we came back and people had been camping there, and we started seeing white flags of toilet paper. In August it was everywhere, you had to really watch where you stepped. In September it flooded, so of course all the feces went into the waterway, Route said.The Kenai Watershed Forum conducts water-quality sampling along the entire river twice a year, said Tim Stevens, with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Ssampling in the upper river hasnt shown a problem with high levels of fecal coliform bacteria a sign of animal feces in the river whether from birds, bears or humans, like there has been at the mouth of the Kenai River. Editors note: Branden Bornemann, environment scientist for the Kenai Watershed Forum, did not return calls seeking comment for this story. 

Since digging cat holes is not advised on the upper river, Route and Fuller researched portable options and discovered the Pack It Out product a heavy-duty, double-bagging system lined with a special powder that congeals liquids, contains odor and quickly begins to break down bacteria.

Memorability Lets You Create

Theres no shortage of mobile photo book applications on the market today, but a majority of these are focused on taking digital creations and turning them into offline, printed products. Memorability, a recently launched iPad photo book app, is different. Instead of bringing online web printing services to the new, smaller screens of smartphones or iPads, the app instead suggests that we no longer need to print out our photo scrapbooks at all and that an iPad-only solution actually has advantages of its own.

If you do a search for photo books in the iTunes App Store, youll find a variety of solutions for building photo albums that can then be shipped to your home. Some of these are built for iPhone, like Mosaic and Simple Prints,The 3rd International Conference on ledstriplights and Indoor Navigation. for example. Others, like Printzel, are universal apps, and others still, like KeepShot, are iPad-only. Memorability fits into this latter group in the sense that its been designed for tablets alone.

But unlike the others, Memorability is not meant as a utility for building hardbound photo books its the digital replacement for them. Theres no accompanying web service or printing option with the app. Users albums are saved locally to the iPad, while the companys servers will only host the albums shared with other family and friends for up to 30 days.

Like the traditional scrapbooks its inspired by, Memorability includes pre-designed templates that can be customized with text and captions. But it also includes a unique feature, as well: voice support. In addition to arranging photos into albums, users can record narrative voice-overs. The resulting photo books can then be viewed in an automatic slideshow mode, or can be swiped through manually.

Private sharing is built into Memorability, allowing users to friend each other, then view and comment on each others books, which appear in the apps feed. Plus, you can optionally share books to Facebook or via email to reach family members or friends without iPads. There the photo books are turned into movie files that play the slideshow and narration when clicked.

Based in Chapel Hill, N.C., and bootstrapped by husband and wife team Anne and Tom Clark, Memorability got its start as many companies do in order to solve a personal pain point in the co-founders lives. I have thousands of photos of my children on my computer, but as a busy mom, I never had time to do anything with them, says Anne, who worked on Memorabilitys interaction design and wireframes while husband Tom, currently a senior director of product at TIBCO, coded.

When I looked for a solution for my iPad where I could display my photos, I wasnt happy, Anne says of the iPads current app selection. I wanted something that was more like a physical photo album. When I didnt find anything like that, I decided we needed to do it, she adds.

However, the team is considering letting users pay to keep their albums shared with others for longer than the 30-day default at some later point in time.

Memorability is interesting because it actually replicates the feeling you used to get from putting photos into a scrapbook, while also taking advantage of the digital medium thats now at hand. Its a lot like Disneys recently launched private social networking app Story, except that Story is only built for iPhone, and is not as polished or pretty things that matter to Memorabilitys most likely female, Pinterest-pinning, family-focused crowd.

How are we going to turn the regulation boat around?

For those of us who travelled to this years Fieldays in Hamilton, we were among 125,127 people who did the same thing. Maybe it was warmer weather but the mood was up beat. 

It makes me wonder why we cannot take the positivity you get from Fieldays and roll it out every day of the year. You can easily add in the other major Fieldays in Northland, Central Districts and the South Island too.They are Disneyland for grown-ups, with journalists from around the world attending them. 

At Fieldays, I was interviewed by journalists from both North and South America, all set up by New Zealands trade man from the embassy in Brazil. What they couldnt understand is how we farm without hand-outs, without aid and without financial protection.

Other than for the weather, life in dairy land is bliss again. Fonterras forecast of $7 for a kilogram of milksolids, with similar projections from Westland and Tatua, not to mention Synlait and Open Country Dairies, makes you feel good to be a dairy farmer. 

Like all forecasts, a lot of water needs to go under the bridge before the money is in the bank. The last thing we thought wed face at the end of January was the worst drought in 70 years covering much of the North Island. 

In recent weeks, a 200-year rain event right here in Canterbury was the most rain I have ever seen. After such events you usually get a break but we then plunged into record snow. Some experts have latched onto global warming as an excuse for the best ski base at Mt Hutt in 20 years. 

For me this may just mean seasons are returning to normal. I mean, a drought in summer with rain and snow in winter are signs of it being, well, summer and winter.The good news is that the rest of the world is seemingly moving to a new normal over climate change policies. How can we go wrong if New Zealand is on the same page as President Obama and the United States? 

Locally, some still want to include farm biological emissions in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).My message to politicians who believe the worlds gaze is on our every move is that it isnt. Look at what has genuinely brought us international attention this year and what has not. 

Slapping our biological emissions into the ETS is like putting a hair-shirt onto the economy. It wont do a jot to save the planet but it will cause carbon-leakage to less efficient systems who will be all too pleased to pick up the slack from us. 

Boosting that research is a huge opportunity but this is where we run into policies that boost urban transport in Auckland, yet starve some great scientists of the money to make that brighter future and big breakthroughs. It also starves the rural areas of good infrastructure to transport the produce we are expected to supply in order to double our exports by 2025. I cant see much, going by the inner Auckland rail loop. 

I can even understand why the media go to some academics and politicians for outrageous sound bites about our industry. Claims which grow more outrageous daily.In recent weeks, those same critical academics and politicians were very quiet when Wellington City accidentally put 6.2 million litres of treated effluent into its harbour. A Georgia man and a North Carolina man reported on Saturday that three men robbed them in a room at the American Hearth Inn in Aiken after telling them to “get naked” and lie on the floor. One of the subjects allegedly pulled a purple handgun and demanded money. The Georgia man said the subjects stole money, car keys and a wallet from him. The North Carolina man said his car keys were taken. The Georgia man reported that he let the subjects into the room after hearing a knock because he knew one of the men. He identified the man as “Stone.” 

A 25-year-old North Augusta man was arrested on Saturday for driving under the influence after the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle with a flat tire traveling on Sudlow Lake Road near Camden Way in Graniteville. The responding officer spotted the vehicle on the side of the road with a flat front tire. He reported that the man sitting in the driver’s seat had red bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. The man allegedly was unsteady on his feet when he exited his vehicle and subsequently failed several field sobriety tests. After the man was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center, a breath sample revealed that he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16 percent. 

A North Augusta man reported on Saturday that cash and jewelry were missing from his residence on Todd Avenue. The responding officer observed a forced entry through a rear sliding glass door that caused an estimated $100 in damage, according to the victim. A witness reported seeing four juveniles near the house at the time of the incident. 

A Bath man who lives on Wall Street reported on Saturday that his Regions bank debit card was missing from his wallet and that someone had used it without his permission to withdraw money from his account. 

A Graniteville man reported on Saturday that two watches were missing from a drawer in a bedroom in his home. He said he noticed that the items were gone while he was “hanging out” with another man at the house after they left a nightclub. After the victim confronted the subject about the missing items, they got into a fight and the subject left the scene in a blue Acura. 

A Clearwater woman reported that her unlocked vehicle was vandalized while she was at a hotel on Jefferson Davis Highway. The responding officer observed scratches on the driver’s side of the vehicle and a derogatory term written on the rear passenger quarter panel as well as additional scratches. The woman identified a male subject and said he had taken a set of keys from her. The subject denied damaging the vehicle.

A 28-year-old Aiken man was detained on Saturday following a traffic stop on Highway 421 near Myrtle Street in Gloverville. The man told the officer he didn’t have a driver’s license. The officer then searched the man and found a clear plastic bag with white powder inside in the watch pocket of the subject’s pants. When the officer asked the man about the powder, he said it was cocaine. 

A Wagener man reported a suspicious fire at a residence on Gunter Pond Road on Saturday.
