everyday definition of a hero is a person who is admired for courage or
noble qualities. But in the world of disability, heroes come in all
shapes and sizes, as seen at the recent National Access Awareness Week
Breaking the Barriers Awards presented by the Ontario March of Dimes
south region.
Brock University accessibility co-ordinator Margaret Sanderson was the guest speaker. She spoke about her personal experiences with disability and focused on her love of swimming. She gave a laugh to those at the jam-packed St. John Ukrainian Hall when she said one way to gross out her teenage son was to ask him to hold her prosthetic leg while she readied to dive into the pool.
Hilda Fair received the Joe Dineley Commemorative Award for exceptional leadership and commitment to furthering the integration of accessibility of persons with disabilities in Niagara. Hilda is a client and has volunteered with the CNIB for 16 years.
She is one of those people who sees a need and fills it, currently helping individuals experiencing first-time vision loss. If any of you have ever been told you will eventually lose your vision, you know how important it is to find someone who has been there, done that and came out the other side able to help others.

The St. Catharines -Niagara Sport Commission Award went to Uwe Natho, who has volunteered with the Brock Niagara Penguins wheelchair basketball team since 2006. His role has expanded to organizing the team's annual basketball tournament plus helping to raise enough money to fund travel costs for players to attend training camps and tournaments throughout Ontario and the club to annually purchase two sport basketball chairs costing $4,000 each.

She has made her art studio accessible, designed height adjustable easels, has underwritten costs for supplies, and given private lessons to individuals who cannot work in a group setting.
Speaking of making places accessible, awards went to the Meridian Credit Union's Grantham branch for its accessible building and services and to Royal Canadian Legion branch 138 Merritton members, who raised $110,000 to install a lift for guests to access the entire building and upgrade washroom facilities. Since the legion is often used for community functions, these changes impact the entire community.
