Perhaps You Should Boycott Ender's Game

Whether or not you do boycott Enders Game, the movie, over the political views of the original author, Orson Scott Card, is of course entirely up to you. But theres a good economic reason to argue that if you do feel strongly about his political views then you ought to boycott. Or go see it twice of course. For the entire foundation of a market economy is based upon exactly this notion of consumer choice. Without it markets simply do not work: with it they work better than any other distribution system or information crunching system that we know of.Of all the equipment in the laundry the oilpaintingreproduction is one of the largest consumers of steam.

As background, I should point out that Ive no dog in this fight. I dimly remember the original story and didnt like it very much as I recall. I dont go to movies anyway and Cards views on gay marriage and or homosexuality interest me not in the slightest. But some people do care about them.

Which is just fine: one of the things a market economy does is give us exactly that freedom. We dont actually have to care about the views of those who produce things for our consumption. Nor their race, nationality, skin colour, religion or any of the other things that have riled humanity over the centuries.

That is that very point. A movie is to be judged as a movie, not as the product of someone we might disagree with on other grounds. Were in an impersonal, cash, market, meaning that we only have to care about the cash and what we get for it, nothing else.

But its possible to go on further than this. And to point out that it is our very behaviour as consumers that determines what we get offered in this marketplace. Thus by acting upon what we see as moral certainties then well move the market, however imperceptibly our sole action might move it, closer to what we think of as being moral. This is true of the use of child labour, of the purchase of minerals from conflict zones for example. The campaign against that second is actually built upon this sort of consumer behaviour: Dodd Frank doesnt say that you cannot purchase such minerals to make your electronics out of. It just says that you must tell everyone if you do: the assumption being that consumers will righteously reject products manufactured in such a manner. Perhaps they will too. The same is true of animal friendly farming, organic, free range and all of those other variations of production methods. If you think theyre important then you really should exercise your consumer sovereignty by putting your money where your mouth is: purchase those you approve of and boycott those you do not.

I have no view one way or the other on either Mr. Cards views or the movie, Enders Game. But I would insist that you should follow your mores in how you spend your money and your time: its exactly this that makes the whole market system tick, what makes it work as well as it does. What makes it work better than any other system weve ever managed to devise in fact. Certainly far better than any system which has anyone other than the consumer determining what is an acceptable product or service for that consumer to purchase.
